This video was shot from the rear of Amtrak Train #1, the westbound Sunset Limited, as it left Houston, TX on July 8th, 2013 Part 1 covers the trip from Houston s Amtrak Station to Memorial Park on Houston s west side, a distance of about 8 miles As a note, since this was shot from inside the car, during the video you can hear some talking between the conductor, my father, myself, and some of the other passengers The video begins as the train leaves the Houston Amtrak Station at 6 55 PM, which is right on schedule This is on UP s Terminal Subdivision (Now known as the Houston Subdivision), and the Amtrak Station is on Main 2 Just to the west of the station we pass Depot Jct (CP LF963), and Train #1 gets onto the Main 1 Connector, which is just a long crossover between Main 2 & Main 1 After a short while, we reach Chaney Jct (CP LF368), where Mains 1 & 2 of the Terminal Subdivision come together After passing Chaney Jct, Amtrak Train #1 is on Main 1 Soon, we pass the hotbox detector located at MP 364 1 The detector s read-out reports that there are no defects, our train has 36 axles, the train is traveling 30 mph, and that the temperature is 88 degrees A few miles to the west we cross over Interstate 10 at an acute angle And just a little later we pass Eureka (CP LF369) At Eureka, there is a single crossover and UP s Eureka Subdivision diverges to the north (Off to the left) from the Terminal Subdivision We round the big curve at Eureka and then come to Eureka Jct (CP LF370) At Eureka Jct, there s another connector to the Eureka Subdivision (It forms a wye) and the lead to UP s Eureka Yard branches off as well Soon after, we cross over Interstate 10 again The remainder of the video consists of the train passing through Houston s Memorial Park and then transitioning back into urban Houston as the tracks head through the west side of the city Thanks for watching! This video was shot from the rear of Amtrak Train #1, the westbound Sunset Limited, as it headed westward from Houston, TX on July 8th, 2013 Part 3 covers the fast trip from Missouri City, TX to Harlem, a distance of about 10 miles As a note, since this was shot from inside the car, during the video you can hear some talking by other passengers and myself The video picks up right from where Part 2 left off in Missouri City, TX as we re passing the control point at Missouri City (CP SA019) When this video was taken Missouri City marked the western end of two main track territory on UP s Glidden Subdivision, as we go from Main 1 to the single main However, UP is currently (As of 2015) double-tracking the Glidden Sub west of this location, so the entire stretch of track covered in the video will have two main tracks by the end of the year Soon after we pass the control point Missouri City, we leave the city itself and enter the city limits of Stafford, TX And in about a half mile we pass the control point Stafford (CP SA020), which is where the west leg of the Stafford TXI wye ties into the Glidden Subdivision I apologize for the still photo showing Stafford, but I had to cut the portion of video through there because there was some conversation about dinner that wasn t relevant to the video itself Anyways, soon after we pick up speed and head west at 70 mph, passing Stafford Road, Murphy Road FM 1092, and an intermediate signal (206) A short while later we leave Stafford, TX and enter the city limits of Sugar Land We then duck under US 59 Interstate 69 and continue west Next, we pass another intermediate signal (224) and then the Hines Lead as we work our way through Sugar Land But, something interesting happens as we head through Sugar Land The rear door of the car came open, so the conductor had to come and close it again While he was working on the door, we pass Sugar Land (CP SA025), which is the east end of Sugar Land Siding A little further on we pass TX Highway 6 and leave the city limits of Sugar Land We then get to Harlem (CP SA029), which is the west switch of Sugar Land Siding and the east switch of Harlem Siding And, the middle of the control point goes right over TX Highway 99 We then head west down the main at Harlem as this part comes to an end Thanks for watching! Download Back and Forth Detouring Sunset Limited #1 Houston, TX mp4 download free video

At the beginning of June 2016, floodwaters on the Brazos River at Richmond, TX (30 miles southwest of Houston) knocked Union Pacific s bridge there out of service Besides being an important thoroughfare for freight on the Sunset Route, it is also the route of Amtrak s Sunset Limited For the first week during the bridge s repairment Amtrak chose to annul the eastbound Sunset Limited at San Antonio, turning it there to become the westbound train the next day (rather than running it to New Orleans) However, by June 10th Amtrak found a solution to avoid the bridge The Sunset Limited would detour around the damaged bridge by traveling on the BNSF between Houston and Rosenberg (just west of Richmond) In this video, the first westbound Sunset Limited to make the detour is shown making its first two moves to access the BNSF First, the train shoves backwards out of the Houston Amtrak Station on Main 2 of UP s Houston Subdivision for about two miles to Tower 26 At about the midway point of the shove the train crosses over Interstate 10, which is the first clip in the video The train slows and eventually stops a couple times as the conductor (at the rear of the train) makes sure the gates are down at each crossing the train has to shove across The second clip shows the train moving forwards again, having pulled onto the Carr Street Connector at Tower 26 to access UP s West Belt Subdivision The train gets onto the West Belt at Lyons and will head south about 5 miles to where the train will enter BNSF trackage AMT1 11 (Westbound Amtrak Sunset Limited #1) AMTK P42DC #140 AMTK P42DC #182 Baggage Car 61014 Transition Sleeper 39005 Sleeper 32050 Dining Car 38024 Sightseer Lounge 33038 Coach-Baggage 31045 Coach 34109 Videos taken in Houston, TX on June 11th, 2016 Thanks for watc

In the summer of 2015 I took a 29-day, 10,459 mile trip from Jacksonville, Florida, to Portland, Oregon, for the National Model Railroad Association s annual Convention (I like big trains as well as model trans ) The journey involved ten stages The Silver Meteor to Washington, the Cardinal to Chicago, the Texas Eagle Sunset Limited to Los Angeles (where I stayed with my brother Tom and his wife Lynn for several days), then the Coast Starlight to Portland Tom and Lynn came along as far as San Jose to spend a weekend with their son -- my nephew After the convention week, I rode a Cascade to Seattle, overnighted there, then a round trip on the Cascades to Vancouver; and after another night in Seattle, the Empire Builder to Chicago and the Lake Shore to New York I stayed with a high school classmate there and saw other friends, finishing up on the Silver Meteor back to Jacksonville -- by coach all the way And if you ve never been on a long-distance Amtrak train, let me point out that the seats are eighteen inches wide and set four feet apart, they recline, and have leg and foot rests If you can sleep in a lounge chair, you can probably sleep in a train seat This video covers the third leg of my trip, from Chicago to Los Angeles Three times a week the Texas Eagle to San Antonio carries a coach and sleeper that run through to LA on the Sunset Limited It is the longest journey you can make on Amtrak without changing trains 2,728 miles I presented this video earlier this evening to the North Florida Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society at their February meeting I hope you enjoy it I narrated the video live as it progressed, but I am not technically ept enough to know how to add sound as it is produced It is put together from video and still shots -- the video portions have the ambient sound However, it is captioned so you should be able to follow pretty well You ll just miss the jokes and witticisms that accompanied the show! If you have any questions, just ask I ll try to answer as best I can, or lie so convincingly that you should be satis
